The Digital Door Viewer gives a clear view of the outside

Here’s another way to replace that peephole with something a little more hi-tech.  There are several different models and brand names with these, you just have to find the one that’s best for your home.  With this you have a large display showing you who is on the other side of the door.  Likely with this no one will be able to use a reverse peephole viewer on your door either.  Not that everyone has them, but if you’re into conspiracy theories, it’s one way to make sure no one can view what’s on the inside of your house from the peephole.

Installation is said to be extremely easy and apparently the design of the peephole and LCD panel would make it extremely difficult for this to be stolen.  The LCD panel itself has a protective lens cover and there are no directly accessible fasteners, wires or connectors.  The best perk with these is that you get an expanded view, instead of the usual distorted short view.  Unfortunately, it’s highly questionable if it’s worth it, given the $399 price tag.

Striker Magnetic LED Light

I’ve never heard of the Striker company before, but they make some really interesting products that everyone can use. They are perfect for the handyman in the house, and they got a cool red exterior look to them.

One of them is the Magnetic LED Light, an interesting little gadget that is smaller than a golf ball, and it can bring a lot of light to wherever you may need it. The shape is that of a spiked ball like a sea mine, and on each of the “spikes” is a neodymium magnet, so you can easily mount it on a metallic surface.

This is perfect for those jobs like working underneath a car, where light is needed. Sure, you need something magnetic to attach it to, but for most fix-it jobs, this is readily available. I have to admit that I would like to see more LEDs on the Magnetic LED light, but just one is bright enough.

So, if you want to get this, go ahead and head over to the Striker Hand Tools Web site and prepare to lay down about $9. While you are at it, check out the Striker Pencil and Folding Multi-Blade and get some other useful tools.

Avaak Vue Personal Video Network

There is a lot of demand for personal home security surveillance systems, but these are often intricate and expensive. A company called Avaak has recently released the Vue Personal Video Network, which is both simple and inexpensive.

The camera that you see in the photo is quite small, only 3 inches high and weighs only 0.1 ounces. See the metal dome on the Vue? That is magnetic mount for the camera itself, which makes it easy to manipulate the camera angle. That mount can be attached to a wall with sticky adhesive or with a screw.

These cameras won’t give you any sound, but they film in VGA at 10 frames per second with resolution of 640 x 480. It has an internal battery (a standard lithium CR123 cell) with enough power for one million images, or ten minutes of video a day for a year.

Of course, the surveillance cameras are useless without a base station, but the Avaak Vue comes with one. The cameras connect wirelessly to the station for a 300 foot range indoors, and mesh technology makes it good enough for a 900 foot radius around the hub.

You should be able to get the Avaak Vue Personal Video Network for about $299, which comes with two cameras. There is a service fee of $19.95 a year, with the first year for free.

ELPA Remote Control Has Built-in Speaker

Did you ever crave a remote control for your television with a built-in speaker? Me neither. A Japanese company called ELPA has made the RC-25SP, and it has been receiving a lot of criticism.

As you can see, this universal remote is not bar-shaped like most, but an odd box-shape with a speaker on the flip-out lid. This is definitely not very ergonomic, unless you are the Thing from the Fantastic Four.

It comes with the receiver that you see on the picture on the left. I’m not certain if this would be a good idea to have this, because most televisions are probably not prepared for this extra speaker feature.

However, who would have thought that gaming controllers would ever had a miniature speaker in them? The one on the Wii works to create a more interactive experience for the user, so maybe ELPA thought they could create some sort of similar effect.

So, you have to give Kudos to ELPA for thinking out of the box for innovation, now if they would have forgotten about the box for the remote design. You should be able to purchase the RC-25SP for about $41, but it’s probably only available in Japan.

The 269 Clock goes for simplicity

Apparently the number 269 is quite important, it’s the address of an old building.  That old building is what inspired the design of this clock.  I can’t help but wonder what the actual building looks like and if it has a swinging pendulum on it as well.  The nice thing is that the Japanese designer apparently has a true love for home, because they opted to use not only materials, but techniques from their local area in order to create the clock.

The designer, Yasuki Takamori, they are from Ishikawa Prefecture within Japan.  These clocks are extremely limited edition, there were only two created.  For those that enjoy one of a kind items, this is at least close to it.  Both of the clocks that are being sold are pictured here.  The number 269 is significant, not only because of the address, but because the designer decided to use the number again to create the price.  So it’s doubtful that many will be able to afford this walnut plywood clock at that price.

The waterproof Canon Powershot D10

If you do a lot of activities outdoors and want to take along a camera with you, a lot of times the average camera won’t work.  Especially if you do anything involving water or cold temperatures, since both situations can have damaging conditions for the average camera.  Well instead of taking along the regular digital camera, you could bring along the Canon PowerShot D10.  It’s waterproof up to 10 meters, dustproof and freeze proof up to -10 degrees (Celsius).  It’s also shockproof, meaning it could be dropped 1.22 meters and still be fine.

If that isn’t enough to keep the camera safe, there is also a range of optional accessories that will protect the camera in extreme conditions.  The camera also features a 3x optical zoom, 35mm wide angle and 640×480 maximum resolution videos, a 2.5” LCD and a 12.1 MP sensor.  Plus having a Face Self-Timer, Blink Detection, Face Select & Track and Smart Auto Mode and Auto Red-Eye Correction.  You can pick it up for $329.

Lightspeed Technologies MCQ Multimedia Ceiling Speaker

Lightspeed Technologies has a brand new MCQ Multimedia Ceiling Speaker that brings together the innovative design of a flat panel speaker, a cone speaker and sophisticated cross-over circuitry to deliver optimum speech clarity, exceptional audio distribution and a ‘full-range’ sound no matter what your source is. This hybrid speaker design came about after a school district technology team in northern Florida suggested to develop speaker technologies into a single, quick-install unit without taking up too much space, and we guess they have succeeded in doing so.

The MCQ hybrid combines an NXT flat panel speaker and a 6 inch cone speaker into a single 2’ x 2’ metal enclosure that lays into the ceiling grid. Only one MCQ speaker is needed in a standard classroom, reducing installation time and money. This unique hybrid speaker is designed to work with Lightspeed’s flexible 800 series of classroom audio systems. These systems use the latest infrared technology, and are considered the core component for integrating various audio sources common in today’s 21st century classrooms. With the new MCQ speaker every word of instruction is clear and multimedia audio is full and rich.

No word on pricing though, but they can’t be too cheap to begin with.

Solar Underground Pest Deterrent

You never know just what kind of underground pests you’re going to run into, so why not stay safe rather than sorry? The Solar Underground Pest Deterrent device won’t harm the environment in any way, and it won’t add to your monthly electricity bill since it comes with a built-in solar panel. Powered by the sun, it will help help drive away underground pests including moles, voles, and gophers.

The weatherproof anodized aluminum spike stakes into the ground, where it emits sonic vibrations every 30 seconds that irritate burrowing pests and compel them to disperse. The deterrent operates within a diameter of 94 1/2′, and the 4″ sq. solar panel charges an integrated battery during the day, even in low light and overcast conditions, so it operates both day and night. The panel fully charges within three hours in full sunlight conditions and will operate for up to eight hours on a full charge.

Nice to know that it comes with a replaceable rechargeable battery pack, all for $59.95 a pop. If dad’s an avid gardener and have been complaining about underground pests, why not get this for him?

Striker’s LED Magnetic Light for awkward lighting conditions

When you’re stuck working on something in a dark corner, lighting is always a pain.  With anything from changing a tire or fixing a leaky sink, you’re already usually contorted in strange angles, but trying to position a flashlight all the while working on what you’re doing is a bit of a pain.  Well this cool magnetic light makes any job just a little easier and makes sure that you have the ideal lighting for the job.  It’s a bit better than clamp on lights, since you don’t always have anything decent to clamp onto.

Since it does have so many magnets attached to it, it can flip around in any direction giving you more options to get the angle you desire.  You would just have to be careful of the magnets being around any hardware that might be sensitive to magnets.  The LED light is wide angle to shine light on a wider area.  It’s about the size of the golf ball and features 12 different magnets.  The Striker Magnetic LED Light is also plenty affordable, you can pick it up for $9.
