USB Wheel Optical Mouse

Wheel wheel, what can we roll off our tongues concerning the USB Wheel Optical Mouse apart from the bad puns that just spewed forth? Brando is offering this unusually-shaped pointing peripheral for your computer, where they claim it to be ergonomic in design although I cannot comprehend sitting down in front of my computer while using it for hours on end without complaining about niggling pains in my fingers and hand joints. Apparently, this $14 mouse will work equally well with both right and left hands, making me even more unsure whether this is really ergonomic or not.

Headache Relieving Wrap

While not everyone suffers from headaches and migraines, those who do actually writhe around in unspoken agony while the world mercilessly looks on. Popping a couple of paracetemol pills might be the most convenient thing to do, but there are some people out there who are seemingly immune to the effects of such medication, leading them to look for other forms of relief. How about the Headache Relieving Wrap?

Developed by a neurologist, this head wrap helps relieve headaches naturally, eliminating the need for medications. A study published by the Archives of Family Medicine proved that the head wrap alleviated migraine and tension headaches in 87% of patients. The unit straps comfortably to your head and provides a soothing, consistent pressure that gently compresses blood vessels to help relieve migraines. It comes with three reusable gel packs that can be heated or frozen, and inserted into the headband to provide relief from throbbing pain. Heat therapy relaxes tense muscles and the cold treatment cools and constricts blood vessels, helping to alleviate tension headaches. The headband is insulated to retain heat and cold and its adjustable strap and Velcro strap keep it in place. One size fits all.

While it might make you look as though you were wearing a turban, missing a flute and a cobra to play the part of the snake charmer, forking out $49.95 as a last resort might actually work in your favor.

Motorola Evoke QA4 is now official

Motorola might be in the doldrums at the moment as each step they take does not seem to result in phenomenal sales of sorts, which can get rather depressing when you think about it. After all, they seem to have fallen into being a victim of their own success, where everything else after the RAZR just failed to capture the imagination of the masses, leading to the quandary where they’re at today. Still, it is nice to see them not throwing in the towel just yet, as it will be a sad day when Motorola is no longer part of the cell phone industry - somewhat like how most people would’ve felt when Sega pulled out of the home console race with the Dreamcast being its last foray. This time round, we have the Motorola Evoke QA4 that was announced officially, so let’s take a look at what it offers in greater detail right after the jump.

First of all, the Motorola Evoke QA4 is but a socially-inclined device that comes with a 2.8″ full touch screen display to make navigation and usage a snap. A wide variety of messaging styles are supported by the Evoke, where you will be able to benefit from a full touch-screen QWERTY keyboard as well as a slide out traditional keypad if you’re more inclined towards actual buttons. Your home screen content can be further customized with integrated widgets and personalized RSS feeds, where you are able to take advantage of the full HTML browser to share pictures, videos and other files online.

According to Mark Shockley, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Mobile Devices, “We understand the importance of having a mobile phone that helps you stay connected simply and seamlessly with your friends and family, whether you prefer to talk, text or network. Motorola Evoke offers the cutting-edge convenience and instant gratification of a full touch-screen, intuitive online browsing and the ability to stay plugged in on your terms.”

The Evoke QA4 is also a multimedia device, supporting audio and video playback of selected files, alongside a camera that not only lets you capture your favorite moments when you don’t have a dedicated digital camera with you, but it is also able to record video although be forewarned that this is no high definition machine for you to parade around with. There is no word on pricing although we do know that the Motorola Evoke QA4 will be out sometime in Q2 this year, which isn’t too far off, actually.

i-LIMB prosthetic hand works like the real thing

It is interesting to know that advancements in prosthetics technology have arrived at a stage where it can get quite impossible to tell the difference between a prosthetic hand and the real thing. Take for example the i-LIMB - this is the first commercially available prosthetic hand that features five individually powered fingers. By merging a revolutionary functionality with amazingly natural cosmetics, the i-LIMB looks set to change lives of amputees all over the world by helping them blend in with everyday life. is changing the lives of amputees across the globe - and blending right in.

The i-LIMB works by utilizing electrodes which are placed on the skin of the remaining portion of the patient’s limb, and that is normally located on the top and bottom of the forearm. Whenever the patient moves the muscles that would translate to an extension of their hand, these very electrodes will pick up on those electrical signals and translate it into individual finger movement within the i-LIMB, making me wonder whether Will Smith’s robotic arm in I, Robot works along the same line although I’m sure by the time robots have gotten that intelligent, prosthetics then work via telepathy or something of the equivalent - since there is no Force for us to manipulate as with the case of Anakin Skywalker.

The i-LIMB was first introduced in 2007 by Scottish company Touch Bionics, and is able to engage in a wide range of unique grip positions that enable the user to balance power and precision as and when required. Extending the index finger alone allows the patient to touch type or press buttons, while rotating the thumb to meet the side of the index finger helps patients grip a key or dinner plate without dropping them. Another problem of pressure in the grip is also met as the prosthetic is smart enough to know when to stop once a sufficient level of grip is achieved, letting one hold an egg or styrofoam cup without crushing them by accident. The i-LIMB comes with a sticker price of $18,000, so hopefully mass production will make them cheaper for folks living in war-torn countries.

Garmin uses GPS to help duffers play a better round of golf, but for a price

When I first read about the Garmin Approach G5 Golf GPS, I thought they had invented a new golf ball with a GPS transmitter built in so you would never loose your ball on the links again. Then I realized they would cost about $100 each, which would be a royal drag if you hit into a water hazard. Nope.

The Approach G5 Golf GPS is essentially a hi-tech digital range finder which uses GPS to ascertain your position (after you’ve found your ball) and gives you range data to the pin based on preloaded maps of thousands of golf holes from all around the world. In addition to range data to the pin, it has a green view for up close putting data (again, a range finder) as well as being able to keep track of your score digitally. Duffers can then download and track their scores onto their PCs. The thing is though, even if the GPS range data gives golfers more accurate positioning in which to choose their irons, etc. For $500, it amounts to a sophisticated scorekeeping system. Sorry, but unless it can find my golf ball for me, it’s not really worth the price, I can add just fine.
