Coolest Gadgets

Locus 3WAY Combination Pen, Pencil, and Eraser

You ever seen those four-color pens, the ones that are essentially four pens in one? I think that if you had one of those, then you wouldn’t have to carry around four different writing instruments. It is probably one of the most simple combination devices that I know of.

Yet here we are, carrying around a pencil and a pen when we could just make a pen and a pencil that combines into one? This is exactly what Japanese stationary designer Metaphys did, a pen and pencil that can shift with just a click of a button. Not only that, it also includes an eraser.

The 2mm lead holder is for when you need to replace the pencil, and I assume that you can replace the ink just as easily. As for the eraser, I don’t know about that one.

You know, this is one of those ideas that is just so simple that I don’t understand why someone didn’t just up and make a pen/pencil combo before this. In other words, I wish I had thought of it. It reminds me of an episode of The Simpsons where Professor Frink gets a Nobel prize for thinking of a tool that is a combination of a hammer and a screwdriver.

This Locus 3WAY pen sells for about $55, but that might be a little too much for me.

Elivision Puts a Screen on a Door

This just in from Korea, home of all the cool tech stuff that we may or may not ever see. This one is from Elivision, and it involves something that we all want: a 17-inch LCD display and speaker on a door.

At first I thought that the LCD screen was designed for the inside of the door, like a high-tech replacement of a peephole. It would appear that Elivision has made this for the outside of the door.

So how does video footage get put on the door? The display is a Linux-based display, and new footage can be downloaded onto the screen via USB.

Now what does a door with a screen say about the owner? Perhaps it is more about what the screen will say. I’m not certain what I would put on this door if I had it. Maybe something like: “I’m not home right now, please go away and do not steal my stuff, including this fancy door”.

I have to admire the design of Elivision’s doorscreen. (I like the sound of that word.) Unlike other designs that I see, the high tech of the screen mixes very well with the low tech wood of the door.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any word on the price on this particular item. I’m sure that it won’t be cheap, especially if the wood is fine and the display is a good quality too.

Echo Bot Voice Messenger

Are any of you readers watching the FOX show Dollhouse? I would have to say that it isn’t the best show ever made. I only bring this up because there is this gal on the show called Echo, and this super-secret agency can essentially program any memory or personality on her.

The concept for this show is very similar to the Echo Bot, a tiny little monster designed to stand at your desk on three legs and say anything that you want.

The Echo Bot is helpful for working at a public office. Just think of it as tiny guard dog for your desk. So if someone tries to use your computer, the motion sensor on its eye will detect their presence, and say things like the one-liner that you see in the picture. Just imagine how startled this intruder will be when an object that kind of looks like a webcam is talking to them.

Yeah, the Echo Bot is not a webcam. Too bad that function isn’t included on it, because the Echo Bot could certainly could pass as one. Perhaps a webcam function would make the price go up.

As it is, the Echo Bot is at a low price of $14.99, and can be purchased at the Xtreme Geek Website. I think that is a pretty good deal. As for te show Dollhouse that I mentioned earlier, the only thing keeping that show alive is Joss Whedon’s name on it. I think that is a pretty bad deal.

ThumbTack is a microphone for the Nano 4G and Touch 2G. Shaped like an ordinary thumbtack, this device plugs into the 3.5mm headphone jack and can be used as a voice recorder. Small and unintrusive, this may go well with the anticipated iPhone OS 3.0 mic applications.

Handpresso DomePod - Portable Espresso with Ground Coffee

Handpresso DomePod - Portable Espresso with Ground Coffee

Handpresso has announced a Handpresso DomePod which uses ground coffee instead of ESE espresso pods. Personally we prefer less mess when making out portable espresso, but if you’re a true espresso snob you’re going to want to grind and use your own. The DomePod allows you to pack up your favorite Arabica, Robusta, or Fair Trade coffee instead of being able to source your coffee in ESE pod form. The patented Handpresso Domepod system makes it easy to empty the coffee grounds â€" a simple click on the dome is enough. You can fill 3 DomePods and take them with you in the included case.

    Shower for your iPhone

    Shower for your iPhone

Touch screen gizmos are all very impressive but you have to touch them. Lots. And because your fingers are greasy, mucky and coated in a layer of unidentifiable gunk, beloved screens soon resemble windows dipped in chip fat and sprinkled with dust, dandruff and gawd knows what else. So thank goodness for the Procare Mobile Touch Screen Cleaning Kit.

PowerTraveller make a range of portable batteries that can be used to recharge devices on the fly and the PowerGorilla is the largest of these, storing enough juice to recharge a laptop.

Charge the PowerGorilla before you leave the house and when you need juice just plug it into your laptop (adapters for common laptops included). It will also juice up an iPod or phone at the same time via a secondary power output.

Last Week’s Coolest Gadget Winner is…

The winner of last week’s coolest gadget competition is the Great Pyramid PC.

This has to be one of the coolest PC case mods we have seen so far here at geeky gadgets, the Great Pyramid PC Mod, made by modder polo360x from the Techpowerup forums.

This amazing case was made from a customized Luxor Pyramid case, which was made from laser cut aluminum, and is a combination of black and silver aluminum, the base measures 19 by 19 inches and the case stands 25 inches tall (there were only ever 200 of these cases ever made, and it looks like there is one less).

    Congrats again to Geeky Gadgets.

    Tiny worktop dishwasher
In second place we have the Tiny worktop dishwasher.

This tiny dishwasher is small enough to fit on your worktop. It prides itself on being green and saving on energy and water and is ideal for people living on their own or for couples. Whoever uses it, it certainly beats washing up.

    Dolphin Monofin
Finally in third place comes the Dolphin Monofin.

If you ever imagined what it must be like to swim like a fish, you may just get your chance. Engineer Ted Ciamillo has come up with a carbon fiber and fiberglass monofin, allowing a swimmer power through the water at 8 mph, twice the speed of Michael Phelps.
