One Touch 911 Dialer

911-dialerYou never quite know when you might need to summon help, and since nobody seems to carry a magic lamp around these days that calls forth a slumbering genie after a few rubs, the next best thing would be the One Touch 911 Dialer.

This is the pendant that calls a 911 operator with one press of a button, helping users sustain independence and mobility. Requiring no contracts or monthly fees, and operating over your existing phone line, a single push of the cordless pendant phone’s button immediately dials 911, letting you converse with emergency responders–not a distant third party. The pendant comes with a lanyard and belt clip, so it’s always close at hand, and its 600′ range allows you to move freely around your home. A unique test function verbally informs you whether the system is within working range. Smaller than most cell phones, water resistant, and weighing a mere 6 oz., the pendant is powered for one year by one AAA battery.

The base unit will plug into the pone jack and AC, and you can bring home the One Touch 911 Dialer for $199.95. We’re thinking this is pretty suitable for those who want to get their elderly parents a useful gift instead of another tie or kitchen voucher.

SimpliSafe for affordable home security

    simplisafe

If you’re looking for a little extra safety within the home, but can’t afford a full alarm system, this is a nice happy medium.  It’s not the bottom of the line stuff that just makes noise, but it’s not quite as good as the very expensive systems that have to be professionally installed.  The little bit of extra security with this will cost you a monthly fee, but it’s only $15 and you get the convenience of it being directly connected with emergency services.

It comes with a base station, which is the point that it will notify both you and the authorities of any trouble it detects.  There will be a keypad at the main entrance of your home so that you or those living with you can deactivate it when it’s on.  There is then also a keychain remote, of which extras can be purchased.  With that remote the alarm can be turned on or off.  Then there is both an entry and a motion sensor.  The motion sensor won’t actually detect pets that weigh under 30 pounds.  You can purchase the package for $225 and then the monthly fee is $15.

The Sony Dream Machine Spy Camera

    sony-dreammachine

There are all different types of products that hide little cameras within them.  Some are as small as keychains and others slightly larger objects like tissue boxes or other random items.  Some of which if inspected very closely at all, someone would notice that something wasn’t quite right.  Well this Sony Dream Machine Camera might actually keep people plenty fooled.  It’s already an electronic, so having a lot of buttons isn’t something that’s out of the ordinary.

Besides being a hidden camera, it also functions as a clock for wherever  you need a camera.  It will record video both day and night, come night time it will just conveniently switch to night vision all on its own.  It can record in real-time and flip on automatically when it senses any motion.  It can also take pictures instead of shooting video.  You can set it to record on specific days and times or set it to the motion sensor.  You can purchase it for $599.95 from the Sky Mall.

The Orb Bluetooth Headset

ring-bluetoothImagine receiving a call from your ring, removing it, and then turning it into a Bluetooth earpiece to take the call. That is the simple concept of The Orb, a ring-shaped device that becomes an S-shaped device to fit into the ear.

The Orb has a flexible OLED that will display the caller information, calendar items, and voice-to-text information. So the next time you receive a ring, you can look at your ring.

You may notice that the opened up headset is hanging securely from the ear, but none of it is in the ear. Yeah, you don’t have to mess around with it too much, as the Orb uses bone conduction technology. Some of you have not seen bone conduction before, but it is a way of transmitting sound directly into the brain through touch.

It’s a pretty simple concept, isn’t it? The best part is the Orb is not a concept, but a device that is planned for release in 2010 for about $129. The Deluxe edition is about $175.

If the Orb sweeps the nation, I look forward to seeing them as wedding rings. I’m not certain the Orb is a good name for this device, as Orb implies something that is spherical, right?

Motion-Sensitive Remote Control

remotion03What you are seeing here is not a vacuum cleaner attachment or what happened after an aardvark sneezed. This is a motion-sensitive remote control. I realize that was probably your last guess, assuming you didn’t lose interest after my somewhat weak aardvark joke.

This concept remote control device, known as the “Remotion” is designed by Ryan Sorrell, and has some Motion Control like the Wiimote or the Loop.

As you can see, buttons are absent from this device as the user moves it to his or her liking. Adjusting the volume is as simple as shaking it up or down. In order to change stations, you move it left or right with a flick of the wrist.

Well, this looks like a good way for couch potatoes to lose from extra fat from their wrist, but I can’t help but want more commands for my remote.

For example, could I use it to operate my DVR? Maybe if I held it up a certain way and turned it left, that could be rewind, and turning it to the right could be fast-forward.

The possibilities are…well, quite limited. Especially when most houses have all sorts of devices hooked to their television, and the universal remote market is growing.

Ordering Kiosk at Jack-in-the-Box

fast-food-kioskSometimes I can’t help but wonder if technology has caused this current economic crisis. Did consumers go into debt to buy tech devices that they just “had to have”? Worse yet, did all those labor saving inventions remove the need for human workers?

Well, I can tell you one job that may not require a human anymore: the fast-food cashier. Like the self-checkout stands that you see at your local grocer or the ATM at your bank, this kiosk that you see to the left removes the human from the fast-food equation.

I am guessing that the screen that says “order and pay here” is a full touchscreen, and you can choose from a menu of food options. Paying is probably done with credit cards and feeding dollars in the slots. I don’t see any place for coins.

In all honesty, I can think of ten good reasons to avoid human interaction with a fast-food cashier. Most of them are young people who don’t really care about serving customers, or old people like Squidward Tentacles from Spongebob Squarepants.

Still, I always had “cashier at fast food restaurant” as my back up plan for retirement. If there is a machine that can do the job, all I have to say is this: Uh-oh.

Now with a set of coffee knuckles on the table they’ll listen good. The mug is a mix of metal knuckles (we hope they make a brass version) and a curvy ceramic coffee mug. We love the concept, and think this will make an amazing gift this Fall when the Fisticup is available.

Split Stick USB Drive is double ended

    split-stick1

When dealing with files from both work and home, sometimes it’s an uncomfortable situation to use one drive for both situations.  When your boss asks you to pull up a quick file while they’re standing right behind you, it just seems to feel slightly unprofessional to have a folder titled “Spring Break 09” on there.  Instead you could opt to keep those files separate, but then you have to be concerned about losing two flash drives instead of just one.  Well with this gizmo you have a flash drive that pops out of either end, so you can keep files separate.

The slider in the center allows for you to pop out either end of the drive.  Each side will store 2GB of data, so they individually are small drives.  When you choose your drive you can choose not only the color of the drive, but the symbol that goes on the top and bottom of the drive.  The symbols range from boring dots on up to flowers and hearts.  They aren’t out just yet, but they are up for pre-sale, you can purchase them for $19.99.

Metal Detecting Dune Buggy

metal-buggyWe’ve seen some pretty decent metal detectors in the past, but Hammacher is back with a more novel way to discover hidden treasures at the beach or in your backyard with their Metal Detecting Dune Buggy.

This is the remote control dune buggy that can detect buried metallic objects when driven over suitable terrain, including backyards, dirt lots, low grass, or flat sand. The buggy can detect buried iron-based metals down to 4″ and when it does, it flashes a red LED and begins beeping to alert you of potential treasure. The remote controls forward, backward, left, and right movement from up to 25′ away. Metal detecting sensitivity can be modified to suit the terrain with a simple dial on the buggy. Includes three faux gold doubloons (metal) to bury and two plastic digging tools. Four AA batteries (not included) for the remote provide up to four hours of operation; buggy requires one 9-volt battery (not included).

The product description reads “Ages 8 and up”, and chances are the adults might be spending more time on this than their little one since times are pretty hard, so who knows, you might actually discover some hidden treasure right smack in the middle of your backyard, eh? The Metal Detecting Dune Buggy is going for $49.95, so you might need to discover a fair number of lost coins before recouping your initial investment costs.

Synaptics offers multi-touch 3000 Series

clearpad-3000Synaptics aims to break new ground by offering yet another updated version of its highly rated ClearPad solution, culminating in the advanced multi-touch ClearPad 3000 Series capacitive touch sensor solution. Arriving at this solution is no fluke for the company, as they have long built upon the success of Synaptics’ patented, flagship ClearPad touchscreen solution, where the new 3000 Series will bring together Synaptics’ best-in-class ClearPad sensing technology alongside their exclusive design-in services, making life a whole lot easier for OEMs and ODMs of mass-market mobile handsets and other handheld devices who want to include the in-vogue high-resolution capacitive touchscreens with advanced multi-finger gesture capability into their products. Guess what Synaptics is trying to say is this - companies who use their displays are able to release products to the market faster with a higher degree of reliability.

What makes the spanking new ClearPad 3000 Series so different from the rest of the displays in the same market? Well, you’d be astounded to know that it is able to distinguish up to 10 simultaneous finger touches (unless you’re born with more than ten digits on both hands, chances are you’ll literally have your hands full with any device using this display!), alongside the ability to recognize complex multi-finger gestures (such as pinch and rotate) with fine accuracy and low latency. Hmmm, perhaps future devices using the ClearPad 3000 Series sensors will definitely be able to hold their own or go up against the iPod touch and iPhone, depending on how good a company’s programmers are in order to come up with an easy and intuitive user interface. The ClearPad 3000 Series is based on new, proprietary Synaptics technology will boasts four dozen (!) sensing channels and advanced power management, trumpeting the case for an 8″ display with superior accuracy without doing a number on your battery life.

If your company is interested, the Synaptics ClearPad 3000 series engineering samples will be abailable for general release will be available in November 2009.

In second place we have the Washable Keyboard.

The Washable Keyboard is perfect if you like to keep your work station clean. Its amazing how many germs and pieces of food get onto your keyboard in a short space of time and with the Washable Keyboard it makes cleaning it so simple. With a normal keyboard its pretty much impossible to clean them properly as most are not waterproof. With this being 100% waterproof it means your keyboard won’t stop working if you happen to spill your drink on it either.

Toshiba targets beauty with Stainless Style model

toshiba-stainless-styleToshiba knows that a man’s home is his castle, although the queen yield considerably far more power in the confines of the castle compared to the king figurehead. Well, we suppose both parties can always find it easier to bury the hatchet whenever there is a full on argument concerning one of life’s little details, where a well designed and tastefully furnished could go some ways in helping couples reach an agreement before their anger boils over into bitter fights. Hence, Toshiba has decided to announce its latest addition to their comprehensive 2009 LCD TV/DVD combination line up, offering the brand new Stainless Style model which in essence, is an all-in-one entertainment centre that merges both style and innovation with picture excellence, boasting a stainless steel look that is in vogue in many kitchens throughout the world.

Features within the Toshiba Stainless Style (pretty neat name if you ask us) include a 16:9 widescreen high-definition LCD display, HDMI and PC inputs that enable it to be used with a computing, gaming support, and is eco-friendly by being ENERGY STAR compliant. There is only one screen size available though, where the 18.5″ model (also known as the 19LV612U) is going for $349.99 when it arrives later this September.

Fruity Speakers take inspiration from nature

    fruity-speaker-2_dhhxu_1822

Here’s a speaker that would probably appeal to anyone that’s grown tired of the average look that many speakers feature.  It’s designed to take an almost organic form, which honestly is hard to see.  However, no matter what the inspiration of the product, it at the very least ended up looking very cool.  When hung on the wall, it would draw about as much attention as an intriguing painting would.

The speaker system is made up of 6 different speakers and two touchscreens.  It’s compatible with the usual forms of media, including MP3 players and CD players.  The designer shows it off in not only the very chic white, but in a very bright attention getting pink.  The design was created by Yue Li, who is from France.  As of now, it’s still a design, but would make for a fun product to have around, if it ever reached the production stage of things.

The Mini LED Camping Lantern

    6a00d8341c5dea53ef0115712bc371970c-800wi

Although you might not actually believe that there is even a remote need for a miniature camping lantern, this thing is quite a bit more powerful than you might initially guess.  Being only slightly larger than the size of your average keychain, most would think it wouldn’t light up much more than a very small dark corner.  Surprisingly though, the seller claims that the keychain, when hung, can actually light up an entire tent.  Of course, I’m sure they mean your average smaller sized tent.  Not something like a circus tent, but still, that’s not too shabby.

The keychain can just easily clip to your keys just like any other keychain you already own.  In addition to being able to light up, it also has an emergency strobe mode when you need to draw a little attention to yourself.  When it’s running on a full battery, the light will work continually for 25 hours.  You can purchase it for $6.99 from Sahalie.

G.I. Joe gets a collector’s set complete with USB dog tag

    gijoe-300x254

With the G.I. Joe movie being just around the corner, it was bound to stir up some random G.I. Joe themed products.  Well for those of you that miss the days of playing with your G.I. Joe’s and watching the TV show, now you can get a pretty thorough collector’s set.  Sadly, it doesn’t actually come with any action figures, but it’s stocked full of all kinds of other goodies, including a flash drive dog tag.

Yes, you can now own your very own G.I. Joe Flash Drive Dog Tag, it’s like the best of the past has joined with current technology to create a cheesy ultimate gadget.  Along with that it has a 60 page book and a cast reunion of all the people that used to do the voices for the cartoon.  As well as a full archival of Hasbro Toy commercials.  In full it has 50 hours of content.  It also includes some fake tattoos to make you look much more tough.  You can pick up this G.I. Joe Complete Collector’s Set for $145.

Avatar Action Figures come with Augmented Reality

avatarmovieposterI really wish that I was at Comic-Con now, as this worldwide showcase of comics often displays some new gadgets, not to mention the 411 on the comic-book movies of next summer.

For example, Mattel has introduced a new line of action figures based on the long-awaited James Cameron film Avatar. This is not to be confused with The Last Airbender, a film based on a Nickelodeon series that coincidently had Avatar in its title.

These Avatar toys use augmented reality, something that I have referred to as the Coolest Gadget ever. It works when one of the toys is placed in front of a webcam. Software provided by Total Immersion then takes over, and the monitor will display information about the character, 3-D animations of the character, and even more pictures.

There is also a plan for bonus features for the “deluxe figures”. These are figures with a 3-D tag, or i-TAG, on the back of them. Scanning these guys will cause them to come to life on the user’s monitor, and placing two i-TAGs together will have them interact.

I believe that I discussed Augmented Reality being used on baseball cards before, but this is the first time that I have seen it used on action figures. I’m surprised that no one else has tried this before, this could be the beginning of a new wave of action figures that actually spring into action.

This device stores and prints grocery lists generated from the items you speak into its microphone. Using an integrated voice recognition system, the shopping list manager matches a spoken item with one of the 2,500 food, beverage, household, beauty, and office products in its database. Each spoken product appears on the LCD and you can add it to the list and print an alphabetized record with the touch of a button. The device recognizes words as specific as swordfish, emery boards, and lawn bags, and identifies errands, such as going to the bank, library, or veterinarian. You can create and manage two different lists simultaneously, add products to the database (up to a maximum of 5,000 items), and customize the sequence in which the products print to correspond with the layout of your grocery store. Attaches magnetically to a refrigerator or mounts to a wall with the included kit. Includes one roll of paper.

Powered by a quartet of AA batteries, the Voice Recognition Grocery List Organizer will set you back by $99.95. We suppose you’ll be able to pay it off in due time after saving on all the gas of making return trips to pick up something you’ve forgotten.
